Shopping for a new baby can be a wonderful but intimidating experience, especially if you are a new mom. There are so many baby products available from so many manufacturers. I have compiled this list from research and experience to make your shopping experience easier and more efficient. Print this list out when you go shopping or use it to help create a baby registry.
Although your baby will not eat solid foods for several months, a bib is great for catching drool and spit up.
Newborns do not need to wear shoes. In fact, wearing stiff shoes can potentially damage your newborn's feet. If you want a couple of pairs for special occasions or for going out, make sure they have flexible soles and are not tight. Robeez makes adorable shoes that will not hurt little feet.
These provide easy access to treat baby's healing belly button. They also fit more loosely and are less likely to irritate.
You may want to take baby's temperature from his/her armpit, but a rectal temperature is much more accurate. Baby won't even notice and you will soon be used to it. And you can breathe easy knowing you have an accurate temperature.
I highly recommend nursing your baby. Don't let the doctors fool you by telling you there can be some 'discomfort'. If you and baby don't get it right (like I didn't) it can hurt quite a bit. But after practice and a couple of weeks of teeth gritting, you soon won't have any pain at all. Don't let me scare you, most women don't have the same experience I did and I would do it again. My baby has been extremely healthy and happy and she's quite advanced for her age. I believe that nursing contributed to these characteristics.
Your baby has very sensitive skin that is susceptible to rashes and irritations. You may want to wash baby's clothing separately from yours with nonallergenic, baby detergent.
For your newborn, you may want to use a baby sling. They keep baby close against your body, which baby will appreciate, and your hands will be free. Plus, you can easily nurse without taking baby out. You can also choose a front pack, but do not put your baby in a back pack until he/she can firmly control their own head.
The hook-on high chair usually fits onto most sturdy table and folds up for easy storage in your car's trunk. Make sure the table is very sturdy and will not tip with baby's weight. I use mine all the time for visiting friends, long distance travel or a picnic in the park.
